Latest News: Mouth Care Matters Continuing Outreach

Mouth Care Matters’ team work together to raise awareness.

Clinical Lead, Mili Doshi was thrilled to present at the physician associate Kent, Surrey and Sussex annual continuing profession development day.  The day included physician associates who work in a wide range of settings across hospital and GP practices and encounter people with oral problems on a frequent basis.  Mili’s presentation addressed the importance of looking in the mouth and common issues faced such as dry mouth, oral care for people with severe dysphagia and how to help people with oral health problems access dental care.

The presentation was well received and feedback very positive:

  • Interesting raised points I wouldn’t normally consider in practice.
  • Will be sure to carry a pen torch from now on
  • So inspiring.  I work in ED and will always look in mouths now!

Earlier in February, Mili Doshi also spoke at the British Geriatrics Society (BGS) trainee weekend in Birmingham.  The Mouth Care Matters’ team were invited numerous times in the past to speak about older people’s oral health for BGS.    MCM was delighted to raise awareness among geriatricians of the impact that poor oral health can have on the general health and well-being of older people.  The talk also addressed what they can do about it.

Samantha Tomlinson, Project Officer and Mouth Care Matters Training Lead, recently presented at an Oral Health, Humanities and Social Science Network Study Day at the Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences at King’s College.

The audience included a varied group of clinicians, senior sociology, arts and humanities academics, social scientists, academic dentists, anthropologists, artists and researchers all very much concerned with the oral health of the vulnerable and inequalities in care. The day had a variety of different speakers covering a range of papers on the topic of Cultures of Oral Health: 1750 to the Present.

Mouth Care Matters continues to spread the message of oral health as a part of overall general health and is pleased to present to a wide range of enthusiastic oral health advocates.  It is important that mouth care is high on agendas for all health and social teams; oral health is the responsibility for all.
